Have you ever bought something in the shops, got home and realised you have nothing to wear it with? Or perhaps you’ve bought something and later realised that you have several very similar items in your wardrobe. Have you ever got to a really good sale, but been overwhelmed by bargains because you have no idea what to buy? This post is for you. You need to plan your wardrobe.
Hopefully, now you have a decent bit of space in your wardrobe. You have a good idea of the colours you like and the styles that suit you now that you have defined your style. Now, you need to plan your wardrobe.
Why plan your wardrobe?
I am a real advocate of planning your wardrobe. It helps you to really focus your shopping. That sounds silly, but I am not great at shopping. I can wander around shops for hours, or spend ages flicking through websites, but never find anything.
I’m also a massive advocate of Capsule Wardrobes. I have a Pinterest board entirely dedicated to it, and have several capsule wardrobe posts planned for after this month. The idea of a capsule wardrobe is that everything in your wardrobe mixes and matches, giving you lots of different combinations. With a capsule wardrobe, you really do need to plan your purchases!
How to Plan your wardrobe
I’ve broken this down into seven steps. Lots of people tell me they like to do a little bit a day, so here goes!
Step One: Look at your trousers and skirts. Are you wearing the same pair of jeans all the time? If you had a pair in another colour, would that help? Or perhaps you always wear trousers and would like to wear skirts or dresses a bit more? Have a think about style and colour (referring back to your best colours and styles identified last week) and make some notes.
Step Two: Look at your dresses. This may be quite a quick task as dresses are a one-item outfit, but perhaps there’s a gap in your wardrobe? Think about any dressy events coming up and whether you’ll need something new. If you wear dresses for work, think about any jackets or cardigans which work with them. Also, have a look at your gym wear. What else do you need? Is there anything you need to replace?
Step Three: Look at your light-weight tops. Shirts, t-shirts, blouses etc. Not knitwear (that’s tomorrow). Work out what works with your trousers and skirts. Make a list of anything you think would work well. You don’t particularly need to be specific about style here – perhaps just ‘something patterned’ or a colour.
Step Four: Look at your jumpers, cardigans and jackets. What works, and what doesn’t? Do you need to add anything to your previous lists? For example, I have a cardigan that I don’t wear any longer – because the top I used to wear with it is now a bit too clingy over my stomach. So I need to add a top that matches to my ‘tops’ list.
Step Five: Look at your shoes. Think about which outfit combinations could work with different shoes. Are you ‘missing’ any pairs? So, if you bought a pair of flat black shoes, would some outfits work better? Have you got shoes for each season? Make a list of any you think would be useful. Nothing specific, but ‘Flat black shoes’ or ‘Tall brown boots’ will be really helpful.
Step Six: Look at your lingerie and nightwear. Are you still in those breastfeeding friendly pyjamas even though you gave up breastfeeding six months ago? (That’s me, by the way.) Is your dressing gown less than Instagram-friendly? Pop it on the list.
Step Seven: Accessories. Scarves, jewellery and bags. These can really pull an outfit together, and if you have lots of dresses, can make them feel and look different. Shopping for accessories is also much more fun than clothes! Make a list of vague ideas – something like ‘Necklace to wear with white top’ is fine.
You now should have several lists: trousers/skirts, lightweight tops, knitwear, shoes, gym wear, dresses, accessories, lingerie and nightwear. Put this list into your phone and keep it handy! Now, you have a real plan for your wardrobe. You’ll never make a shopping error again (well, I can’t promise, but you’ll try).
