Our living room has been a work in progress pretty much since we moved in. Proportionally, it’s a lovely room at the front of our house, a rectangular room approximately 5m x 3m with a fireplace in the centre of one of the longer walls. The room faces east, so it gets the morning sun and it’s lovely and light throughout most of the day.
We seem to have very different taste to the previous owners of the house, and when we moved in, we had no furniture at all except a TV stand and a couple of bean bags! So we put up with the yellow walls and the stained carpet for a few months while we sorted some furniture.
It took us a couple of years to get the whole room pretty much sorted – and to be honest, I’m still not happy with the fireplace but it’s currently covered up due to a very inquisitive toddler.
The walls are painted in Snowfall by Crown which is a gorgeous colour – it’s a pale grey and the colour shifts in different lights.
The taupe sofa is by Willow and Hall. The door to the living room is fairly small, so we were only able to fit a small sofa through it. (We did try to get a larger sofa through it but it wouldn’t fit… That’s another story.) It’s leather, so it’s great for the children.
The two chairs are both from Next, in their Sherlock style. They are our ‘his and hers’ chairs!
The cushion on the striped chair is from Sofa Sofa. We were sent a cushion to review, and I’m really pleased with it – the fabric is good quality, with a slightly velvety texture, and it’s really soft. The cushion holds its shape well too as it has a feather down interior. They are the Florence Scatter Cushions in Flanders Stone.
If you do order from Sofa Sofa, the colour choices on the ordering screen are really small, but they do seem to be a true match in real life. They’re really good value as well and often seem to be reduced.
I love pale wood and a slightly Scandi style. The tables and the sideboard are from BHS Home, and it took me ages to find a sideboard which wasn’t absolutely huge!
The floor lamp is one of my favourite pieces in the room. It’s from John Lewis and is a very simple, elegant tripod floor lamp. The table lamp is also from BHS.
There’s quite a bit of Laura Ashley in the room too: the curtains are from Laura Ashley and the print over the fireplace is also Laura Ashley. The animal prints are from Twitter Lane Interiors in Clitheroe which is a gorgeous shop and well worth a browse if you’re ever in the area.
We only had the carpet fitted a few months ago and I’m really pleased with it. After two years of living with stained and worn yellow carpets, it’s absolutely luxury!
I’m so pleased with how our living room has turned out. Yes, in my dreams I’d love to have a woodburning stove and a pale wood TV stand, but until I find a TV stand which swivels so that Tim can watch the football at the correct angle, I’ll have to put up with the glass and chrome one! As for the woodburning stove, well, it’s somewhere at the bottom of the ‘one day’ list!
